26.-28. February 2023: the Materi-A-Net-Team examines alabaster sculptures of the exhibition “Alabaster sculpture in Europe 1300-1650” in the M Museum Leuven

During the dismantling of the exhibition “Alabaster sculpture in Europe 1300-1650” at the M Museum Leuven, members of the Materi-A-Net team (Wolfram Kloppmann, Thomas Hildenbrand, Olivier Rolland) were able to examine several works of art on site. The restorer Olivier Rolland and sculptor Thomas Hildenbrand focused mainly on the photographic documentation of the traces of work (picture 1). The geochemist Wolfram Kloppmann was able to take samples from some of the artworks for isotopic examination, test the use of the near-infrared spectrometer for distinguishing between alabaster and marble (picture 2) and to create 3D models of selected works.
